Living Next to Tigers-The Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park
In the Northern Hemisphere, along the northeast of the Asian continent, on the territory of China, there extends a mysterious and vast area -- the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park. The park lies at the boundary of Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, as if a verdurous pearl inlaid on the land. This national park appears to be a masterpiece shaped by the nature, a home to numerous rare animals and plants, and a paradise of life.
Once you enter the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, you will find the Siberian tigers, a symbol of the tenacity and fortitude of the nature. This majestic big cat is one of the largest carnivores on Earth, yet it is now listed among the world's top 10 most endangered species. Found primarily in Jilin and Heilongjiang in northeastern China, the Siberian tiger embodies both the challenges and wonders brought along by the unique biodiversity of this remote region.
Biologists are using modern technologies such as hidden cameras and GPS collars to track the tigers, to record their most natural behaviors, to understand their daily actions, and to study their interactions with the environment. While tracking the king of the forest, we also unveiled a whole new world: the ancient coniferous forests, the rare migratory birds, the agile herbivores, as well as the elusive carnivores such as the lynx and the brown bears.
The park is an ecological treasure that holds the most primitive habitat and the rarest animal species, including the giant carnivores such as the Siberian tigers and the Amur leopards. It is crucial to protect this area in order to maintain the unique biodiversity of the Northeast China forest belt.
Miracles have been made in the effort of protecting the ecosystem in this cold temperate climate: in just over three years after the park was launched, the number of the Siberian tigers and the Amur leopards -- which were merely 27 and 42 -- already exceed 70 and 80 respectively after reproduction. According to the plan, both of their populations will reach 300, when they could be removed from the endangered species list. Today, the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park has become a harmonious home for rare wild animals represented by the tigers and the leopards.
